Diving underwater digital camera flash vs. flashlight??
Posted on Aug 29, 2008 under 3 |Im going diving over christmas break and i was thinking of getting the sealife reefmaster mini since it doesnt need underwater housing. I know my pictures will be blue if i dont get a bigger light but the pro set with the big flash is 450$ compared to the price of 250$ for just the camera. If i got an underwater flashlight for like 30 bucks would it have the same effect on my pictures and make them more colorful and not so blue?
Get the strobe. A flashlight is no way near good enough for decent photography. The colour spectra is way off.
As for blue. Your pics will be blue, green, or tea coloured in background no matter what. It all depends on the water you're in. No flash or flashlight will compensate for it unless you're doing macros.

If you want your pix to look good. Do a manual white balance and/or use a red filter. Manual white balance will give you the truest looking colors. (find something white at your depth (Sand usually) point your camera at it and let the camera figure the rest out. A UK cannon might work.. but the spectrum is wrong.. HID is nice.. but 15 W cannisters are spendy….
